The intro talk lasts around an hour and is completely informal. Your teacher will explain what TM is, how it differs from other forms of meditation, and what the learning process involves. There is time to ask anything you like. There is no obligation to sign up for a course, and no sales pressure of any kind.

The course takes place over four consecutive days, usually in sessions of around 90 minutes to two hours. On the first day you receive your personal instruction — a one-to-one session with your teacher during which you learn the technique itself. The following three days build on that with group verification sessions, where your teacher checks your practice and answers questions in a small group setting. After the four days you will have everything you need to meditate independently.

Course fees are set nationally by the TM organisation and are structured on a sliding scale — based on gross household income — so that the practice is accessible regardless of your financial situation. Your teacher will discuss the fee structure privately with you during or after the intro talk. Reduced and subsidised places are available.

Yes. TM requires no particular beliefs, no prior experience with meditation, and no special physical ability. It has been taught to people from ten years old upward. The only requirement is that you can sit comfortably with your eyes closed for twenty minutes.

Most meditation techniques involve some degree of focus, concentration, or guided visualisation. TM does none of this. There is no effort to direct attention or to produce a particular mental state. The mind is simply allowed to settle on its own, using a sound given by your teacher. The experience tends to be one of effortless rest — quite different from techniques that require you to notice, follow, or control thoughts.

Many people who come to TM have struggled with other techniques — often because those techniques require a kind of mental discipline that is hard to sustain. TM asks for none of that. If anything, people who have found meditation difficult tend to respond particularly well, because the effortlessness of the technique is such a contrast to what they have tried before.

Yes. TM is taught exclusively in person, with a trained and certified teacher. This is an intentional part of the tradition — the personalised instruction on day one, in particular, cannot be replicated online. Sessions take place at our Glasgow centre.

Your relationship with your teacher continues after the four-day course. We offer follow-up verification sessions, group meditations at the centre, and the ability to come back with questions at any point. There is no time limit on this support — many people return years later for a refresher. You also have access to the wider TM community through national and international events.
